About

Meet Yulan

Yulan was born in Sichuan, China (1989), and came to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to study and live in 2015. Yulan has personally experienced the joy, rebirth, loneliness, struggle and loss of living in a European country as a Chinese international student, doctoral researcher and immigrant with multiple identities. Yulan understands the disempowerment and restrictions of women in East Asian cultures, understands the boundary entanglements and connections between parent-child relationships in East Asian families, and also appreciates the enrichness and solitude in intercultural relationships. At the same time, she continues to explore and interpret the new identity of the in-betweener in Chinese and Dutch culture.

Because of her interest in people (happiness and pain), Yulan began studying psychology in 2006 and obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in applied psychology and medical psychology in China. Yulan conducted doctoral research in clinical psychology at the Academic Medical Center (AMC) of the University of Amsterdam. Her doctoral thesis focused on psychological trauma and resilience in global cultures.

Yulan provides psychological (counseling) support to international students, doctoral researchers and expats in Europe (mainly the Netherlands). Besides her private practice, Yulan also supports clients from a multicultural mental health service company. Her work is in Mandarin Chinese and English.

As an intercultural psychological counselor, Yulan's style is friendly, warm and humanistic. Yulan pays attention to the relationship in counseling and believes that an atmosphere of trust, connection, tolerance and non-judgment is the soil for healing to occur. Yulan helps you organize your thoughts, (re)discover your inner feelings and needs, find your strengths and resources, and adjust and strengthen your coping tools. Yulan sees the uniqueness of each client, so she will individually integrate tools from different treatment modalities to help you get closer to your goals.
